Thanks to Dr. Larry Durand for drafting this letter concerning the fluoridation issue with the South Blount Untility Board. I have the letter saved as a doc file which can be opened in microsoft word. Email me for a copy @ chipwebbdds@msn.com or you can cut and past the info from the post below.
Dear South Blount Utility Customer,
As you may be aware, your water utility is no longer providing protective fluoride in your water. As a person dedicated to your family’s dental health, it is my responsibility to inform you that your teeth and particularly the teeth of your children are now at increased risk for decay, toothache and infection.
Extensive research and millions of healthier teeth have proven water fluoridation to be one of the safest, most beneficial, least costly public health measures of modern medicine. I have included with this letter some important information which those representing you are ignoring. I am not a water board member, nor have I appointed those on the board, so I am not in a position from where I can directly help. You are a customer and voter, and those on the board and elected to represent you in local government are answerable to you. I encourage you to write or call those people to voice your desires. I urge you to feel free to use the facts below which you personally feel are most important to you when you write or call your representatives. For more information regarding fluoride and fluoridation, visit the American Dental Association’s “Fluoride and Fluoridation” Web site www.ada.org/goto/fluoride.
I thank you, and the children of Blount County thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Doctor’s name
Information regarding water fluoridation
The American Dental Association, the U.S. Public Health Service, the American Medical Association and the World Health Organization all support community water fluoridation.
Simply by drinking optimally fluoridated water, the entire community benefits regardless of age, socioeconomic status, educational attainment or other social variables. Community water fluoridation does not discriminate against anyone based on income, education or ethnicity. Fluoridation’s benefits are realized without behavior change on the part of an individual. The benefits of water fluoridation are not limited to those with access to dental care.
Community water fluoridation was cited as one of 10 great public health achievements of the 20 th century by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Fluoridation is cost effective. For most U.S. communities, every dollar spent on community water fluoridation results in a savings of $38 in costs to repair (fill) a decayed tooth. It has been calculated that the annual cost of community water fluoridation in the U.S. is approximately $0.50 per person.
Studies prove water fluoridation continues to be effective in reducing tooth
decay by 20-40%, even in an era with widespread availability of fluoride from other
sources, such as fluoride toothpaste.

The American Water Works Association, an international nonprofit scientific and educational society dedicated to the improvement of drinking water quality and supply, supports the practice of fluoridation of public water supplies.
